Dear SABA Washington Members,

We are one month down in the new year, and SABAW is thrilled to kick start the year by welcoming the new Board for the year 2026.

We are deeply grateful to our continuing board members for their commitment to a second term—- this continuity of leadership positions will enable SABAW to reach even greater heights in the year ahead. We are also excited to welcome new board member Bhavya Sree Kandala and look forward to an engaging and successful year together.

We also thank outgoing Board members--Dev Narasimha, Akansha Bhat, and Sindoori Sriram--for their service and contribution last year.

The South Asian Bar Association of Washington (SABAW) is immensely grateful to everyone who attended the 2025 Annual Gala on October 17th! The Gala's success is an amalgamation of the efforts and contribution of our keynote speakers, members, guests, and volunteers--an ode to SABAW's mission to bring the legal community together.

SABAW also extends its gratitude to the judges in attendance at the Gala.

From June 19th to 22nd, SABA North America hosted its Annual Conference at Denver, Colorado! The event was an incredible success and members of SABA Washington Ishir Mehta, Pooja Dave, Aneesh Mehta, Tahmina Watson, and Sindoori Sriram attended in person and share with us the pictures above.

Quoting incoming SABANA president, Nishi Kothari, "SABA North America has always been a powerful voice for South Asian attorneys in the U.S. and Canada, and now is the time to help bring that voice globally." Resonating with her vision, it is SABAW's goal this year too to strengthen our ties with South Asian legal communities and across all the state chapters of SABA.

FIRESIDE CHAT WITH JUSTICE SURYA KANT

On June 4th, SeattleU, Roundglass India Center, K&L Gates, and SABAW cosponsored a fireside chat with the incoming Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Justice Surya Kant. SABAW is grateful to Prof. Sital Kalantry for bringing these events to our community here in Washington.

WSBA BAR LEADERS SUMMIT

On April 24-25, WSBA hosted the inaugural Bar Leaders Summit for affinity and county bar leaders which was a huge success! Representatives from more than half of the affinity bars and 18 of Washington's 33 county bars gathered in Seattle to connect and learn how they can revive member recruitment and engagement for their nonprofit associations. SABAW President, Shashi Vijay, along with other affiliate bar leaders graced the occasion!

MAY DAY OATH REAFFIRMATION CEREMONY

May Day, also Law Day, is a celebration of the Constitution and the Rule of Law. Members of SABAW attended various oath retaking ceremonies organized across the state by various organizations. SABAW's founding member Judge Ketu Shah hosted the oath reaffirmation ceremony at the King County Superior Court and SABAW member Tahmina Watson co-hosted the ceremony at the Maleng Regional Justice Center at Kent. SABAW is proud and grateful to be associated with upholding the Rule of Law.

SABAW President, Shashi Vijay, joined hundreds of other lawyers who came together at the University of Washington reaffirm their Oath of Attorney led by U.S. District Court Judge Richard A. Jones.

AAPI HERITAGE MONTH JUDGES PANEL

Celebrating AAPI Heritage month, the Asian Bar Association of Washington along with SABAW, Korean American Bar Association of Washington, Seattle Chinese Bar Association, and Filipino Lawyers of Washington hosted a panel of AAPI judges representing "firsts" in the AAPI legal community earlier this month at the WSBA Conference Center.
